The PHQ-9 is the first 9 questions of the general Patient Health Questionnaire assessment measuring severity of depression. Depression severity it commonly used to detect and monitor depression as a symptom of other mental and behavioral health conditions. The PHQ-9 is self-administered and has been validated for use in primary care rating the frequency of the depression symptoms. The ninth question screens for the presence and duration of suicidal ideation.
This assessment is used to monitor the severity of depression and response to treatment. It can be used to make a tentative diagnosis of depression in at-risk populations – eg, those with coronary heart disease or after stroke. The PHQ-9 can also be administered repeatedly to reflect the improvement or worsening of depression.
Fast and easy to use, the PTI App version of the PHQ-9 is an economical, reliable and validated method to screen. Questions are presented one at a time with a single click answer to advance to the next question. The question format automatically adapts to the respondents device (smartphone, tablet or PC) making the PTI App version of the PHQ-9 ideal for mobile devices.
Using PTI data services, when a questionnaire is complete it is immediately scored electronically and an in-depth report with summary and trending analysis is generated. Results can be printed, loaded into an EMR/EHR and are available as a PDF. The PHQ-9 is often used as part of a SBIRT protocol or as one dimension of an integrated BH screening interview.
